ANIA SANCHEZ VALLE
Born 1977, Santa Clara (Cuba)
Ania is a self-taught Cuban multi-platform artist. Starting as a Contemporary dancer in Cuba, she participated in Rosario Medina's Danza Contemporanea School of Choreography, the Theater Group "Puntal Alto" (peg stilts) by director Fidel Román, studying theatrical anthropology of Eugenio Barba, and in the experimental group Danza Aberta of choreographer Judith Sanchez. Moving to Brazil, she studied at Angel Vianna's dance school and participated in the socio-educational project of choreographer Ivaldo Bertazo.
Living in São Paulo, she participated with installations, photo and video performances in collective exhibitions at Galeria Vermelho, Cervantes Institute and the Mercosul Parallel Biennial at the gallery Casa do Chiclete.
Her last individual exhibitions were Labirintos Capilares (Hair Labyrinths) and O Outro Vies do Espelho (The Other Mirror Bias) at Galeria Minima. Ania develops themes of alterity, cultural identity, and the phenomenon of immigration through collages and drawings.
